A foghorn sounds because the lighthouse cannot be seen, because fog has obscured and overcome the light. At these moments, a foghorn illuminates a landscape in sound when all has faded to grey. This talk looks at where the foghorn came from, how it was invented and exported around the world, and how people reacted when it was first installed. Stories of the foghorn exist as whispers and anecdote, and this talk pieces together a social and cultural history of an iconic coastal sound, hidden in 19th century archives, which echoes through vintage science-fiction stories, cinema, and folklore.
